This was so fun to do on Halloween! I knew my class wouldn't be super focused, but would have fun doing something like this. They were super engaged! We did a really fun pumpkin activity after this that paired well with the lesson that made the students even more excited!

Description

Introduce or review the life cycle of a pumpkin plant with this foldable sequencing activity. A fun mix of a worksheet and a craft, this cut-and-paste resource is differentiated (4 template options) and can be used for a fall, Halloween, Thanksgiving, or harvest science lesson.

Once complete, the 2 halves of the pumpkin are brought together, then gently pulled apart to reveal the inside. Your students will love opening and closing the pumpkin like a magic trick!

Benefits of this activity

  • Low prep
  • Children learn about the pumpkin life cycle in a fun and hands-on way, that’s a bit different from a standard science worksheet.
  • Can be used to introduce the life cycle, or as a review/assessment to check understanding.
  • Encourages fine motor/scissor skills, hand-eye coordination (folding), and sequencing.
  • Differentiated options allow for multiple age ranges or abilities to do the same activity.
  • Finished foldouts can be inserted into an interactive notebook where they can be referenced by children.

The templates

Print out a template for each child.

There are 4 template options to choose from:

1. Color the pumpkin life cycle stages, cut out, glue and fold.

2. Color the pumpkin life cycle stages, cut out the stages and sequence them, glue and fold.

3. As above but with a straight cutting edge.

4. Color the life cycle stages and pumpkin halves, sequence the stages, glue, and fold. There are 2 label options for this - one has pictures with words, the other with short descriptions.

What you need

You'll need colored pencils and scissors. Glue is only required if you are using the cut and stick options. You may find it useful to have a pre-made example for children who might require more of a visual cue for the folding.

Save printing costs by showing the folding instructions on a screen.

This resource is an 11 page PDF. It is not editable. The zipped file contains both US and UK versions.
