Description

As a middle school librarian, I noticed many students at this age who still struggled with alphabetizing and numerical order, both of which are important life skills. When it comes to the Dewey Decimal System, the most important lesson isn't that students should have to memorize all the main classes, but rather to learn how to navigate an ordered system using the online catalog and understanding signage in order to find the information they are seeking. Understanding the difference between fiction and nonfiction is also important, and learning about genres helps students recognize their preferences in reading for enjoyment.

These worksheets were created to reinforce library literacy lessons. They include:

1. Fiction Genres - matching genre to its description & answer sheet

2. Fiction Genres - word search & answer sheet

3. Practice Finding Authors by Genre [using the online catalog or book shelves if books are labeled by genres]; no answer sheet since answers will vary

4. Practice Finding Fiction books by Genre [using the online catalog or book shelves if books are labeled by genres]; no answer sheet since answers will vary

5. Main Classes of the Dewey Decimal System - matching main class number & main subject title & answer sheet

6. Dewey Decimal Classification - exercise matching main class number and where different book subjects are found & answer sheet

7. Dewey Decimal Classification - another exercise matching main class number and where other book subjects are found; answer sheet

8. Differences Between Fiction & Nonfiction& answer sheet

9. Sorting alphabetically worksheet & answer sheet

10. Sorting numerically worksheet & answer sheet

Pair the DDC & Fiction & Nonfiction worksheets with the PowerPoint, "Sorry, Mr. Dewey: A Tale of Messing Up the Dewey Decimal System."
