What educators are saying

My library students had a wonderful time using this resource when we were learning about the Dewey Decimal System.
We used this during library rotations. It was fun having the templates to match our theme! Thank you for creating and sharing this resource!

Description

Need a fun library center activity to help explain your Dewey Decimal lessons? This sorting game features little make-believe books that I created to match the 10 Dewey categories (which are represented by cute, little bookshelf mats).

As your students sort through the book cards, they’ll be learning about the Dewey categories and discovering where to find books in your library media center. This Dewey Sort-a-Shelf game offers engaging, hands-on practice with a helpful chart as support. Here's how it works!

WORKING IN SMALL GROUPS, STUDENTS WILL:

✅ Choose one of the little book cards and read its title.

✅ Look at its cover illustration.

✅ Try to determine the book's topic.

✅ The group will discuss and decide which shelf would be the best match.

(I have a “Dewey cheat sheet” chart to help them as they sort.)
✅ The group will continue sorting the books and clipping them onto the shelf

mats until each one has been considered.

✱ Clothespins or Velcro can be used to help students attach the book cards to the correct shelves, 000 through 900. Of course, it’s fine to just let them stack the book cards on the correct shelf mats, too.

Need to differentiate? -- This resource includes an easier fiction/nonfiction sort for younger students — and there's an extension activity for your older students as well.
