Key components of each Letter of the Day mini-lesson:
- Letter name identification - Students are taught the capital and lowercase letter name.
- Letter sound identification - Students are taught how to produce the letter sound. Easy to follow scripts and visuals are provided to assist students in learning the proper mouth formation for sound production. Modifications for students with complex communication needs are included.
- Recognizing the letter in text - Students will have the opportunity to find the capital and lowercase letters in text. Each letter includes a short alliteration poem that describes a capital letter cartoon.
- Producing the letter form - Students will learn how to form the capital and lowercase letters. Easy to follow scripts provide clear and concise wording for letter formation. Modifications are provided for students using alternate forms of writing
This program follows the Enhanced Alphabet Knowledge instructional outline (Jones et al., 2013), and is a thoughtful and systematic way to deliver explicit alphabet instruction throughout the year. This program is organized to teach one letter per day and cycles through the letters of the alphabet six times throughout the year. Can this program be used with students who have significant speech delays?
Yes! This intervention is not only appropriate for students with speech delays, but is an effective instructional option for working on reading and articulation at the same time. Please consult with your student’s speech therapist to determine the sound approximation that you should be encouraging during the lessons. If the student is unable to make an approximation of the sound, you can modify the activities by having the student listen to you model the sound, as they say the sound in their head.
Why the mouth pictures?
The mouth pictures paired with the mouth formation instructions provide students with an added layer of support. Using the mouth pictures along with a mirror draws the students’ attention to the formation of their mouth during each sound.
Can I skip the letters that my student already knows?
Yes! Once the student has correctly identified the letter on three separate data points, you may consider skipping the letter (or combining letters) on the next cycle.
What do I do if my student is unable to hold a pencil to write the letters?
There are no fine motor prerequisite skills required to begin this program. If a student is unable to hold a pencil, consider using an alternate pencil. Options include: a traditional keyboard, a keyboard on a communication device, a low tech alphabet board, letter stamps or letter tiles.
Can I use this program with my current reading curriculum?
Yes! Each mini lesson takes approximately five to ten minutes and is intended to compliment, not replace, your current reading program.
What is the research behind the letter of the day approach?
The letter of the day approach is based off of the work of Jones & colleagues (2013) and follows the Enhanced Alphabet Knowledge Instructional Routine. Modifications and considerations for students with significant support needs were expanded upon through the work of Erickson & Koppenhaver (2020).
