    Description

This resource can help your students read and spell effectively. The purpose of this bundle is to build awareness of sounds in words (phonemic awareness) and knowledge of how spellings (graphemes) represent these sounds in printed words. This is a critical step in orthographic mapping which will help reading and spelling proficiency. With this knowledge, and these letter tiles, thousands and thousands of words can be made.

    • Use this alphabet to practice building and changing words e.g. use “f”, “r”, “i” and “dge” to make “fridge”, then change it to “ridge”, change that into “bridge”, or use “n”, “igh” and “t” to make “night”, then change it to “light”, then “flight, then “fright”, then “right”, then “sight”, then “slight”.

    • All letters have sound marks under them (except for the prefixes and suffixes). A dot is used where one letter makes one sound. A line is used where more than one letter makes the sound. This will be a major help for children when reading and spelling words and will be an important step towards orthographic mapping.

    • This set is also a useful way to demonstrate that there are multiple ways to spell many sounds, for example the sound “ay” spelt “ay” as in “day”, “a…e” as in “make”, “ai” as in “rain”, “ey” as in “they”, and “ea” as in “break”.

Each letter tile is slightly over 1.5 inches wide (4.2 centimetres exactly) and 2.3 inches high (6.0 centimetres high).

    Included in this resource:

    • 27 single letters – color coded with letters that make vowel sounds in red and letters that make consonant sounds in blue (there is one of each for ‘y’. These could be photocopied to have more than one of each letter.
    • 18 extra letters that are most used, to help build up the quantity of those without having to photocopy the original sheet too often.
    • 54 digraphs and trigraphs, also color coded with red and blue for vowel sounds and consonant sounds
    • 18 blank red and blue boxes to be used if there are letter combinations you would like to add
    • 18 boxes of commonly used suffixes (color coded as green)
    • 7 boxes of commonly used prefixes (color coded as purple)
    • 11 blank green and purple boxes for you to add extra ones that might be needed
    • The free resouce which contains a copy of each letter
