Let's Learn Elapsed Time

This math flipchart for Promethean Board teaches students elapsed time, as well as determining the start and end time. This flipchart is aligned with 13.5 Houghton Mifflin Math - 1st grade. The lesson opens with a word problem assessing prior knowledge of time concepts. Next, is a quick review (test prep) and lesson quiz (pre-test) derived from the text. Next is a title page introducing the lesson and then a page stating the lesson's objectives. The lesson then introduces vocabulary term(s): minute, minute hand, hour, hour hand, half hour, o'clock, elapsed, along with the definitions and a higher order thinking prompt. The first activity gives students the start and end times on a clock, in which they must determine the elapsed time. Next, they are given the elapsed time and the start time, and must draw the clock hands to demonstrate the end time. The next activity has a chart in which students must fill in the components that are missing (start, end or elapsed time). Next, is Kagan structure with groups and time problems. The following page has a link to really cute elapsed time game (similar to Pac Man) that the class may play on the Promethean Board. The next page allows for review and closure, in which they must tell their partner two things they've learned today. Last is a math journal prompt asking students about their real life experience with elapsed time.
