Let’s Chat--Bringing Soul & Validity To ChatGPT Writing

Description
Note: Some of my products have some “out there” ideas. Make sure to look at the preview slides before purchasing. If you don't like the preview, then it's not something you should purchase. Everyone's classroom is unique and while these lessons work within my classroom, that may not be the case in another’s room.
Note 2: DO NOT purchase if you're expecting a simple 'print off' and let the students have at it. I highly suggest you get a good handle on the activities BEFORE you let the kiddos give it a go.
That being said . . .
Attention to all in the educational realm! AI is here . . . actually it has been for quite some time, but now IT'S REALLY HERE! The students know it's there; you know it's there . . . and you know they're going to use it, as they should. It's not going anywhere, so why run from it?
This creation (to me) was a necessity. My students HAVE to get a handle on working with AI such as ChatGPT. It's part of their world and ours now. So, here we go . . .
From my students (and me), here's my rationale:
Keep in mind, that this is MY rationale. You certainly do not have to agree. You can come up with one of your own if you’d like. However, I simply share with my students (teenagers) that the quickest way to make yourself OBSOLETE in the workforce is to allow or show others that TECHNOLOGY can do YOUR JOB better. Thereby, if you want AI to do all your writing for you, IT CERTAINLY CAN AND WILL. However, IT’S NOT YOU!!!! It doesn’t know you; it doesn’t know your experiences; it does not have a heart or soul. YOU DO! My challenge is simple: SHOW IT YOU CAN DO BETTER!
My Tips For Using
-Stay small meaning to have your students pick a tone concept that they want to hone in on (i.e. conversational/lighthearted/entertaining/descriptive).
-Whichever tone is decided upon, aim to come up with TWO AREAS in each section to improve upon (i.e. the pink circles).
-While up to the educator, I like my students to share a split screen of before and after (at least for polar bears - Titanic); the video game and final (book/movie) practice exercises (prior to validation activities) tend to get much longer, therefore a split screen is difficult to do.
-Remind the students to ‘BE THEMSELVES”! The more “you” and personal you can make your writing, the less robotic (AI) they will seem.
That being said, I used this with my 8th graders. It takes some getting used to, as it's very tempting to the teenage brain to simply let AI do all the work for you. YOU/THEY MUST FIGHT THIS INCLINATION! Encourage them to stretch themselves and enhance the writing.
Note: As often the case with many of my creations, there are some video game components sprinkled in. The three games that are utilized within the learning experience include:
-Elden Ring
-Journey
-Concrete Genie
Tips For Teaching 2
The final portion of the learning experience is to have the students validate the information provided by ChatGPT. Hence . . .
-See my model of China’s One Child Policy
-Look over the CRAAP method
-Focus on the bold-faced areas of the ChatGPT response.
-Keep in mind, to make it more accessible, the responses are shortened to allow for a specific focus.
-Only do THREE question prompts from the CRAAP Test. Start small!
-Based on your answers to the above bullet, make sure to make your choice on the validity of the information.

An additional note (even though they're not included in here) is that ChatGPT is not very apt (at least not yet) at good openings, closings, and transitions. With my students, I also embed the following to add to their writings.
If this sounds like something you want to try, have at it! But remember . . . it isn't a cakewalk. They're gonna' work!
