Description
Our last batch of Free Modifiers consists of the infinitive phrase, the adverb, and the prepositional phrase. We see them all the time, but mostly as bound modifiers in the Level 1.
But they do occasionally get free. That opening infinitive sequence, from Black Beauty by Anna Sewell, exhibits wonderful charm and vividness, delightful for the child or adult.
The gracefulness of movement, with an adverbial arrangement that builds with flowing grace, displays Hemingway at his astute best.
And the observation about with and without sets the stage for a chart of 50 prepositions that serve as the first building blocks of carefully crafted free modifiers that come from planning rather that coincidence.
This might be the time to indulge in a revised version of Mad Libs, using these three free modifiers as fillers-in for lower-level blanks. Again, keep books handy so the students can continue their treasure hunting to find the nuggets that work.
