Lent and Easter Unit - 2nd to 5th grade

This resource contains seven PDF lesson plans to teach children all about the Easter story. They can all be used individually or as a whole unit for Lent and Easter. They are suitable for ages 7 -11. The seven lessons are:

Ash Wednesday

This is a 5 page lesson plan (PDF) to teach children all about Ash Wednesday and the start of Lent.

The lesson is highly interactive and contains details of a small group introductory activity, introduction to the topic, main task and final whole class activity. There are whole class discussions and two simple written activities for the children to undertake. The plan includes objectives for children with three levels of abilities. Also included is a 21 slide animated PowerPoint with useful facts for the lesson and the Bible story around which the lesson is based. (This is not editable. Lent - Giving Something Up

This is a lesson plan to teach children about Lent and why Christians give something up during Lent.

The 5 page lesson plan (PDF) includes details of an introductory group discussion, an introduction to an event in Jesus' life, a brainstorming activity, a poem writing task and a final drama activity. The plan includes learning objectives for three levels of abilities and assessment strategies.

There is also a 15 slide animated PowerPoint presentation included, which gives details about Lent and tells the story of an event in Jesus' life linked to Lent. This is not editable. The plan also includes differentiated templates in color and black & white for the poem which the children write during the lesson.

Lent - Doing Good Deeds

This is a lesson plan and resources to teach children about Lent and why Christians perform good deeds during Lent. It is suitable for ages 7-11. The 5 page plan (PDF) includes details of an introductory activity, an introduction to a parable, discussion of the parable, a writing task and a final discussion. It contains learning objectives for three levels of abilities.

A 21 slide animated PowerPoint (not editable - click 'Read Only' to open) containing the introductory activity, information about Lent, suggested good deeds and an illustrated version of the parable is also included, as is an optional template for the written task (PDF). Some of the images on the PowerPoint only appear when it is run as a slideshow with the animations. No further preparation required!

Palm Sunday

The detailed 4 page PDF plan includes an introductory activity, whole class discussions, a main drama activity, a written activity and a final discussion. There is a simple 17 slide animated PowerPoint presentation of the story of Palm Sunday to use, which also includes some slides about Palm Sunday traditions. (This is not editable. The Last Supper

The 4 page pdf plan includes a starter, a main drama activity, a simple written activity and a final drama activity. There is a 21 Slide animated PowerPoint presentation of the story of The Last Supper to use to introduce the lesson and a document with Da Vinci's painting, around which the written activity is based. Good Friday

The 4 page PDF plan includes details of an introductory activity, whole class discussion, an idea generating activity, a poem writing activity and a final whole class discussion. I have included the pictures needed for the introduction (5 PDF pages), a template for the writing activity and a 9 year old's example (2 pages). Easter Sunday

The 4 page PDF lesson plan includes an introductory activity, whole class discussion, a main drama activity, a written activity and a final whole class discussion.

There is a 22 slide animated PowerPoint included, which contains the pictures for the introductory activity and the story of what happened on Easter Sunday and the following few weeks.
