What educators are saying

This activity was great! It really let the students see and understand the scale of our atmosphere. I had several students tell me that they learned more doing this project than they had all unit!
This was a great hands on resource for my students to really see the scale of the atmosphere. My kids really enjoyed this activity!

Description

Create an 8-foot-tall (2.4m), scaled-down model of our atmosphere and discover cool information about our atmosphere at the same time! Students will also learn a little history about humankind's ventures into our atmosphere.

Includes Troposphere, Tropopause, Stratosphere, Stratopause, Mesosphere, Mesopause, Thermosphere, and Exosphere. No prep.

The only way to get a true sense of atmospheric scale is with a model this big!

Crosscutting concepts: scale, proportion, & quantity, systems & system models.

SI units used throughout. Imperial units provided where appropriate.

-Great for distance learning - students may complete the activity with little to no teacher assistance.

-Activity is now a TpT Digital Activity. This allows you to post student instructions to your Google Classroom - saving you time and photocopying. (Graph with labeled axes still requires photocopying/printing.)

  • Step-by-step student instructions & questions (3 pages).
  • Graph with labeled axes (10 pages).
  • Extension activity to help bring the distances into perspective for your students.

Additional requirements: scissors, tape, colored pencils, markers, and a personal electronic device with internet access.
