Description

This lesson teaches students about concepts like density and polarity through a fun activity of making a lava lamp. All you need is simple household materials. This lesson comes with an informational text article, science background information for teacher, flaps and folds for interactive notebook and a layered book. This lesson starts with phenomena.

This lesson can be done with many different grades but the content seems most appropriate to 5th-8th grade.

It is aligned with NGSS

5-PS1-1. Develop a model to describe that matter is made of particles too small to be seen.

5-PS1-4. Conduct an investigation to determine whether the mixing of two or more substances results in new substances.

MS-PS1-1. Develop models to describe the atomic composition of simple molecules

and extended structures.

And the Utah SEEd 6.2 Density describes how closely matter is packed together. Substances with a higher density have more matter in a given space than substances with a lower density. Changes in heat energy can alter the density of a material.
