Description

This is a 45-minute JHS/HS level lesson on Elizabeth Acevedo's poem about her experience as an Afro-Latina and her connection with her hair. The poem is in English with few Spanish terms that I have defined for students.

The lesson includes a download of her video from Youtube along with a Powerpoint Presentation and a Word document with the poem. The lesson starts with annotation focus questions then transitions to a discussion and culminates with an exit writing task.

Elizabeth Acevedo's work is a great way to engage all of our students and include culturally responsive lessons while maintaining rigor and teaching our students critical thinking skills. The lesson also includes a video of the performance which is another way to engage our students especially as we transition to remote or blended learning models.
