Latin Transition Video #21 "Today I learned" for CI TCI TPRS and 90% TL

Administrators love seeing you use this daily transition video to end class. The latest research mentioned by ACTFL is that students retain better when they reflect on what they have learned. Make this a daily part of your routine and create daily reflection while packing up.

You can stay in Latin, create a 90% target language classroom and manage classroom behavior and flow much better when you take charge of your transitions - even when in a class with a wide spectrum of Latin skills.

♥ ♥ ♥ It is spoken by a professional musician, as are all the videos. I wish I could say he was a native speaker, but, well, you know . . . which is why this was so hard to create! Latin teachers disagreed about the correct wording, and there were no native speakers to be the ultimate decision makers.


Same with pronunciation - I was blessed that a consortium of teachers vetted it for me. You Latin teachers are very devoted to helping one another and your students!

Time to confess - in eighth grade I took Latin back in the 60's with Mr. Lund. The first day of school he read all of the previous year's students grades, noting that no girl ever passed and really shouldn't be in Latin class. My parents insisted I stay with it.

It was the first period of the day and the nice administrative assistant let me walk around the building collecting the attendance books. It took longer and longer as Latin class became a source of discomfort. Of course, the more I missed, the more difficult it became. It is the only class I ever earned a "D' and a "F" and my parents kept me in it. My parents insisted I stay with it as I was better at it than my brothers learning Latin to be alter boys. I could pick it up faster but since I was a girl in the 60's that was irrelevant to the church.

At the end of the year, Mr. Lund advised me to take Spanish as I was too dumb for French. So I did.

Great advice!

I thrived with Mrs. Katherine DePasquale and Mrs. Nuzio. I earned both the highest Italian and Spanish awards upon graduation.

Transition videos with music and voiceovers defy the conventional wisdom of comprehensible input for extended stretches before output. For some reason music short circuits and surpasses this traditional wisdom and research! Students start saying and singing the words in these videos in the appropriate context! Why? Because I took all the expressions my students need in my class and after hearing the music, the words just fall out of their mouths! You can visit my blog for more about this.

How do you use transition videos?
Use these three steps to take charge of your transitions.


1. Make a slide for each activity in today’s lesson.2. Insert one of my brief transition videos before the slide and train your students to watch the video in Latin. Soon they are imitating the voice over or else singing the song. Do this every day and when you are observed by your administrators they will note your seamless transitions.

3. Buy a remote presentation device or wireless mouse and click to the next slide from any part of the room so you can stand close to students who struggle to behave.
