    Description

    Felicia Matronalia!

Matronalia was an ancient Roman holiday that celebrated women. While this unit fits perfectly with Women's History Month (March) and International Women's Day (March 8th), it works well for any time of year. It's always a good time to learn about Roman women and appreciate the women around us now.

    This bundle includes:

    • A Matronalia cultural handout to explain the Roman holiday and introduce a few notable Roman women: Hortensia, Livia, Agrippina the Younger, and Julia Domna. This handout also includes thematic Latin holiday terms and practice with present tense verbs.
    • An English-to-Latin word search using Matronalia vocabulary.
    • A Matronalia card activity, which comes with a list of sentence starters in Latin for students to use when writing a note of appreciation to a friend or family member. In honor of Matronalia, there's a space on each card template for the students to draw a flower or flower crown, a common decoration for this holiday in Rome.
    • An activity that starts with a reading about Greco-Roman tree and flower myths (Narcissus, Adonis, Pyramus and Thisbe, Baucis and Philemon, Daphne, and Hyacinthus) and then asks students to illustrate their very own flower and write an flower myth in English inspired by randomized second declension adjectives.
    • A coloring activity where students use declined Latin forms of the noun "flos, floris, m. flower" to color in a flower-themed picture. These make excellent classroom decorations when your students are finished!
