Description

Landmark Supreme Court Cases That Rocked Our World is a high-interest research project for high school government or for any content area. Students research Supreme Court landmark cases of historical or legal significance that impacted our individual rights and liberties while also shaping our history.

After conducting research, students showcase their landmark Supreme Court cases by using the free Animoto website and creating an educational music video! Your students will love presenting their research using digital storytelling versus a slides presentation or a traditional research paper! Viewing the project model on Tinker vs. Des Moines will further excite and motivate your students to create their own!


Selecting a Topic and Engaging in Inquiry-Based Research

Students will first select a landmark Supreme Court case that involves the rights of students, children, or one that features controversial school issues. A suggested topic list with research links is included.

Once they choose their topic, students will engage in inquiry-based research. The note-taking chart with prompts and website links scaffolds the research process by ensuring your students note the essential facts about the cases they have chosen.

Searching for Related Images and Planning Video Content

Next, they will begin searching and saving images relating to the events, the people, and the civil liberties involved. Using their note-taking handouts, students will then draft key information, dates, and facts to include in their Animoto video production through the form of texts and picture captions.

Creating Research-Based Music Videos on a Landmark Supreme Court Case

As a final step, students will use Animoto to type in their texts, upload their images, and to select music from the website's copyright-free library. The Animoto website is user-friendly and fun! Music videos can be created using any Wi-Fi-enabled device. All they need is access to Google Chrome!

A Google Slides Animoto Tutorial is included! Students are given step-by-step instructions with screenshot images on how to use Animoto's website and to create their own videos. Implementation is easy!

This project takes approximately 4-5 days to complete! This is a perfect way to implement research and digital storytelling into your classroom while keeping students engaged and motivated!
