Description

The Create a Newspaper Article Project is a way to have students demonstrate their knowledge, independently or with their peers.

Students complete reflect and research information from the past with contemporary issues, and a create a newspaper article.

Materials include:

Some of the topics students could examine include:

  • Marbury v. Madison (1803)
  • McCulloch v. Maryland (1819)
  • Dred Scott v. Sandford (1857)
  • Plessy v. Ferguson (1896)
  • Brown v. Board of Education (1954) and more!

In this engaging project, students assume the roles of editorial team members of a regional newspaper. They are tasked with creating articles that seamlessly connect historical events with current issues, fostering some of the following skills:

  1. Research Skills: Students learn how to conduct effective research by gathering information from diverse sources, evaluating the credibility of sources, and citing them accurately in their articles.
  2. Critical Thinking: They develop critical thinking skills by analyzing historical events and contemporary issues, identifying connections, and making informed arguments and conclusions.
  3. Information Synthesis: Students learn to synthesize and organize complex information from various sources to create coherent and informative articles.
  4. Writing Skills: They enhance their writing skills by composing well-structured, persuasive, and engaging articles that effectively communicate their ideas to a broad audience.
  5. Self-Management: Through managing their time and project tasks, students learn to plan, set goals, and meet deadlines effectively.
  6. Peer Collaboration: They practice collaborating with peers, assigning and managing roles, and giving and receiving constructive feedback.
  7. Problem-Solving: When faced with challenges or unexpected issues during the project, students work together to find solutions and overcome obstacles.
  8. Reflective Practice: Students have the opportunity to reflect on their work, identify areas for improvement, and apply lessons learned to future projects.
  9. Digital Literacy: As they use technology for research and document creation, students enhance their digital literacy skills, including proficiency with word processing software and online resources.



By selecting topics, conducting research, and crafting articles, students gain a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of the past and present, contributing to the development of informed, engaged citizens.
