What educators are saying

The activity was fun for my students. I needed more rigorous questions for my honors class but they were great for general biology!
I loved having activities to help students make connections. This tends to be a more difficult topic, it made it engaging.

Description

In this lab, students will complete two activities that demonstrate lactic acid fermentation in their bodies.

In the first activity, students will be pinching a clothespin for as many times as possible in a certain time frame. Not only will students feel the fatigue in their fingers, but the data will show the increased inefficiency of their muscles.

In the second activity, students will hold textbooks in their hands, away from their bodies, and parallel with the floor. This one really makes them feel the burn!!! My middle school students LOVED how active this lab was and it thoroughly conveyed the concept of the alternate-energy making process of fermentation. Why it is a good thing to do, and also why it is not so efficient!

Students are required to answer pre-lab questions, take observations, collect data, and make conclusions.
