Pages 1-2

The first page is a nonfiction passage telling the story of how Labor Day got started during the Industrial Revolution. The second page contains nine open-ended reading comprehension questions.

Page 3

The third page is a cause and effect flow chart helping students identify problems, people, events, and laws that helped create the first Labor Day and the holiday we know today.

Page 4

The last page is a tic-tac-toe writing activity! Students choose three prompts in a row and answer all three. The prompts encourage students to think more deeply about various topics related to Labor Day, including the Industrial Revolution, work, appreciation, communities, and a thought-provoking quote about the dignity of all work. These prompts make excellent discussion-starters and are guaranteed to get your class talking (in the best way!).
