Create an engaging classroom experience when teaching lab safety with this scavenger hunt. Use this resource to supplement your lab safety unit.
You can do one of two things when teaching laboratory safety equipment and their uses in your science classroom:
- You can show students the location of all the safety equipment in the laboratory and tell them their function
- Your students can discover the location of the safety equipment using a scavenger hunt.
How to Use this Resource:
- Each group of students are given a series of 8 clues. Using their prior knowledge of lab safety they will be required to solve the clues to figure out the lab safety item.
- Students will then move around their lab or classroom and locate these safety items.
- On each safety item they will discover a code which they will need in the end to decipher a cryptogram with a lab safety message.
What students learn from this activity:
- By solving the clues students can figure out/ discuss the use of certain safety equipment in the lab. These include:
- Safety shower
- Eye wash station
- Fire extinguisher
- First aid kit
- Chemical fume hood
- Fire blanket
- Goggles
- Lab coat
- Students will become aware of the location of these items in the laboratory in case of emergency.
DO NOT HAVE ALL OF THESE ITEMS PRESENT IN YOUR SCIENCE LAB OR CLASSROOM?
- Use pictures and place these strategically around your room with the codes attached
- Use the EDITABLE file to include the items that you do have!
