Critical thinking does not have be relegated to the upper-level courses in Spanish; students can start young in their language journey. This is precisely why, I created this resource: to explore complex, controversial issues in a comprehensible, and accessible language for students.
La corrida de toros resource centers around two engaging, yet comprehensible articles about the age-long debate regarding the controversial (to some) cultural practice. This activity is a great way for your students to learn about the culture, the controversy, and engage in critical thinking... all in the target language.
This versatile resource can be used in a variety of ways:
- Provide students with a short reading activity
- Invite students to read and discuss
- Informational text
- Free Voluntary Reading at the beginning or end of class.
This activity contains the following:
1. Two strong and opposing perspectives on 'La corrida de toros."
- Perspective #1: A proponent of bullfighting advocates for the practice, stating reasons that include cultural tradition, and the economic engine it bestows on the region.
- Perspective #2: This opinion stems from an animal rights activist, and lists moral reasons as to why the practice should cease. This article also alludes to some other alternatives that do not violate animal rights while preserving cultural traditions.
2. The readings coming with a "visual dictionary" and glossary, so your students don't skip a beat, and are able to visualize parts of the reading.
3. Cognate connection activity: This pre-reading activity activates schema and encourages students to have several wins before delving into the text. The note-taking sheet allows them to capture cognates, and use them in sentences.
4. Glossary of words for both articles.
5. ¿Quién tiene la razón?: T-chart for outlining the salient points of each person’s argument.
6. Analysis of quotes: Students read authentic quotes from politicians on both sides of the arguments, and decide if they are in favor or against the practice. They are then encouraged to write a short reaction.
7. Comprehension questions- the comprehension questions asks students about the text as well as the visual stimulus (for those of you IB teachers!)
8. Newspaper writing activity- students are now the reporters and write their own response while including their pictures. There is a sample included with instructions.
Language considerations: Most of the article is written in the present tense with a smattering of past tense structures to keep the linguistic integrity intact.
Personal note: This resource stemmed from conversations I had with a person from the Pamplona region. We talked about movies, culture, and bullfighting. I have used this resource while also teaching Agentes Secretos, a novel by Mira Canion.
