Description

Are you in need of a resource that allows your students to practice their graphing abilities as well as their argumentative skills? This activity is perfect for you!

Included:

  • Student Worksheet
  • Answer Key

---

The overarching question for the worksheet is: What are the two variables that affect an object's kinetic energy?

Students will answer this question using the Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning format. On the front of the sheet, students are given the data table for a student's trial data from testing their cotton ball launcher. Using this data, students will construct a line graph to show the change in kinetic energy as the speed of the cotton ball increases.

After the students have completed the graph, they will answer two questions in which they will have to interpret the data which will guide them nicely into the CER question.

The CER requires that students use two quantitative pieces of evidence (from the data table or the graph). This will allows students to completely answer the question and practice their argumentative writing skills.

Notes

- As always, feedback is greatly appreciated!

- I will answer any and all questions about the resource so please feel free to reach out

- The data and the background information for this resource are not real. They were made up so that students could more easily see the changes that may occur to real populations over time.

NGSSMS-PS3-1
Construct and interpret graphical displays of data to describe the relationships of kinetic energy to the mass of an object and to the speed of an object. Emphasis is on descriptive relationships between kinetic energy and mass separately from kinetic energy and speed. Examples could include riding a bicycle at different speeds, rolling different sizes of rocks downhill, and getting hit by a wiffle ball versus a tennis ball.
