Description
These 7 writing center activities are my favorite ways to support emergent writers in my kindergarten classroom, but can also be used in preschool, first grade or homeschool. Use these beginning writer centers as an independent activity, writing station, morning work, choice time or for small group lessons. Each writing center can easily extend whole and small group writing lessons and offer authentic alternatives to worksheets. Just add some pencils and crayons and you are ready to go!
When children visit the writing center, they try out many new forms of writing and express themselves through words and pictures. The writing activities offered here are intended to give children opportunities to practice fine motor skills, explore print concepts, apply alphabetic knowledge, and communicate their ideas with others.
Read Writing Center Activities for Beginning Writers to see these ideas in action.
✅These 7 Emergent Writing Centers include:
- Draw it! Label it!: These 40 guided drawing and labeling activities can be used year round (10 for each season) in your classroom writing center. Each page illustrates a step by step directed drawing that is simple, easy and fun for preschool, kindergarten, and first grade kids.
- Whole Class Journals: Kids come to school every day with stories to tell! These whole class journals are a great way for them to share these stories while gaining fine motor and emergent writing practice. The 10 topic prompts represent universal themes for preschool, kindergarten, and first grade children and include writing about boo boo’s, lost teeth, pets, trips and more.
- My News: Kid have lots of news to share! Use this news writing template at your writing center to help kids draw and write about their outside-of-school life.
- Trace and Lace Cards: These Trace and Lace cards combine two fine motor practice activities in one and are a great alternative to worksheets for preschool or kindergarten children. The first, a tracing activity, invites children to trace over the straight, curved, and zig zag lines contained within a seasonal shape. The second, a lacing activity, allows children to loop a cord through the holes and around the edges.
- Thank You Cards and Letters: Teach children how to say thank you to families and school staff by using these simple writing templates for thank you letters and cards.
- Dear Teacher Mini Notes: The Dear Teacher Mini Note templates were designed to be easily integrated into your daily routine and centers to increase the number of writing and fine motor opportunities you are able to offer your preschool, kindergarten, or first grade children.
- Journal Writing: Journal writing is a great way for kindergarten and first grade children to practice their emerging writing skills while documenting their growth over time. These writing journals include lined paper (several options) with sentence writing cues in the form of a cute little caterpillar. Pages without the caterpillar are also included.
