Description

Young students often need repeated practice with a kindergarten math concept before they master it. Because strong number sense is such an important building block to future math success, beginning with a strong foundation in counting and cardinality with the numbers 1-10 is crucial! In addition to 50+ worksheets, this set includes “I can” statements for display, flash cards for practicing number comparison and missing number skills, a ten frame mat with teaching tips, a parent letter for oral counting practice, and activity cards with ideas for oral language and movement.

What does this counting and cardinality set include?

This kindergarten math set is designed to give students meaningful and repeated practice with the numbers 1-10 as well as to help them understand the concept of zero. It includes:

✔ Illustrated “I Can” Statements (Aligned to CCSS)
These nine statements are written in child-friendly language and are useful for providing a focal point for each lesson. These statements are aligned to the Common Core Counting and Cardinality standards.

✔ “Turn and Talk” Activity Cards
Each of these nine cards provides an oral language prompt to promote the development of math vocabulary and to give students experience with explaining their thinking and reasoning.

✔ “Move and Learn” Activity Cards
Each of these nine cards includes a movement activity that allows students to engage their bodies while practicing a counting and cardinality concept. These activities are great for carpet time, transitions, and for quick review throughout the year.

✔ Number Sense Flash Cards (Greater/Less and Missing Number)
Great to use as a warm-up activity, these cards give opportunities for students to build number sense within ten. Teacher tips are included.

✔ Printable Ten Frames and Teacher Tips
Hands-on practice is important! These printable ten frames and included activity ideas give students opportunities for concrete practice with the numbers 1-10.

✔ Printable Worksheets
Over 50 printable worksheets give teachers options for differentiation, review, and assessment in addition to the repeated practice students need to build mastery. See the descriptions below.

3 Focused Worksheets per Number 0-10
These practice pages give students experiences with a variety of ways to represent the numbers 0-10. See the preview file for examples of each sheet.

Find and Highlight Pages
This simple activity allows students to become familiar with the ways the numerals look in different fonts and gives practice with numeral formation.

5 Counting Objects Pages
These worksheets give students practice at counting pictures in various arrangements and writing a numeral to match.

3 Show How Many Pages
These worksheets require students to produce a number of shapes to match a numeral on the page. On two pages, students draw circles to match the number. On the third, students cut and glue squares to match.

Home Practice Counting to 100 Letter
This page, included in two options (1-110 and 0-109), is intended to help families support students in the goal of being able to orally count to 100 by ones and tens.

4 Missing Number Pages
These pages ask students to count on from a given number and to fill in a missing number in a series of three numbers.

6 Greater/Less Pages
These worksheets give students practice in comparing two numbers within ten to determine which is more or less. These pages do not introduce the greater and less symbol but have students color or circle to show which number is greater or less.

How to Use These Kindergarten Math Printables:

The materials included in this kindergarten math set can be used to supplement your teaching of counting and cardinality standards for the numbers 1-10. The “Turn and Talk” and “Move and Learn” activity cards are great for using as part of your whole-group lessons when introducing a standard. The number sense flash cards are useful as a warm-up before a lesson, as a quick review at closing, or for more intensive work with a small group. The printable worksheets can be used in many ways. Sometimes you will want your students to simply take a page to their seat and complete it independently for practice. Other times, you might wish to differentiate by choosing different pages for some students or by pulling some students to work in a small teacher-led group while others complete the same work on their own. Finally, you may wish to use some of the pages as assessments to inform your future instruction.

What teachers are saying about this counting and cardinality unit:

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “It is so hard to find resources for numbers for kindergarten students that are engaging and fun at the beginning of the year. Most of my students do not have pre-k experience, so sitting and completing any activities at the beginning of the year is a challenge. This resource was very engaging for students, and they were able to sit and focus on the worksheets for extended periods of time!” –Morgan T.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “This resource was great for an introduction to counting and cardinality for my students. The variety of activities offered great practice for my students. This resource was easy to prep and offered a large variety of practice.” –S.E.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “Favorite number sense pages! So easy for me to informally assess my kiddos to see who can apply their knowledge of each number!” –K.L.

This counting and cardinality set is part of a money-saving Kindergarten Math Bundle that provides year-long materials for five standards-aligned math units.

Count forward beginning from a given number within the known sequence (instead of having to begin at 1).
Write numbers from 0 to 20. Represent a number of objects with a written numeral 0-20 (with 0 representing a count of no objects).
Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities; connect counting to cardinality.
When counting objects, say the number names in the standard order, pairing each object with one and only one number name and each number name with one and only one object.
