    Description

These 4 math center activities are my favorite ways to build number sense in my kindergarten classroom, but can also be used in preschool, first grade or homeschool. Use these number sense centers as an independent activity, station, math tubs, morning work, choice time or small group lessons. Each math center can easily extend whole and small group math lessons and are great play based alternatives to worksheets. Just add your favorite math counters or loose parts and you are ready to go!

Read Number Sense Activities for Your Kindergarten Math Center to see these ideas in action.

    These Number Sense Centers include:

    • Number Stories: These fun math mats are a great hands-on way for children to grasp the concept of addition and subtraction while building oral language and math vocabulary through storytelling.
    • Counting Jars: Counting collections of mini erasers, natural materials, or math manipulatives is a fun and playful way for young children to practice 1:1 correspondence, oral counting, skip counting, place value, and numeral writing.
    • Number Building: These number building math mats challenge children to use their visual spatial sense to construct numbers using fun materials while providing number recognition and formation practice.
    • Number Staircases: Number staircases are a playful, hands-on way for children to visualize the pattern of our number system and understand that each number has a value that is one more or one less than the numbers that come before and after.
