Description

Pinch Pots may seem underwhelming to teach but the reality is that pinch pots and pinch pottery has its unique challenges for students. Relatively easy to make when demonstrated, students can struggle with maintaining even thickness of walls. The repetition of pinching and relying on one's own hands as primary tools proves that pinch pots and pinch pottery are the most challenging of all three handbuilding techniques!

In my classroom my students endure pinch pottery as their first handbuilding technique. This practice aids in understanding the limitations of clay. This product uses very little tools (5 tools!) and doesn't require glaze to finish. I've done a variety of pinch pot projects every year to keep my curriculum fresh and these are by far the most fun! Who doesn't love a donut? The idea of the pinch pot is transformed into a recognizable object, and the possibilities of creative freedom are endless!

Craving a project that was different than others I've done in the past, I looked to my archives of gallery photos from my decade spent in living in NYC. Ironically, the last gallery visit was March 2020, where I encountered Jae Yong Kim's bright, vivid, whimsical donut installation. Using his work as inspiration, and prior knowledge of color theory, I let loose the "Ceramic Donut" project in my classroom. The student work featured in this product are from my Art 1 students (9-12 grades). This was their first real experience with clay and they were delighted to experience the process from chunk of clay to their own personal donut. This product focuses on form, attaching clay effectively and color application.

This lesson can be suitable for any age group, although the examples provided in the student slideshow are from students in grades 9-12. This product is meant to follow the FirstDays of Clay, and is a great introduction to ceramics and its possibilities. You can certainly build an entire unit of pinch pots related projects by incorporating “Pinch Pot Planters”, “Pinch Pot Trio”, “Double Pinch Pot Animals” and “Faberge Eggs”. This product is meant to build confidence with clay manipulation, use of limited tools (hooray for 5 tools that don’t have to be ceramic specific!) and using the score and slip method to attach clay. Students will see inspiration from artist Jae Yong Kim and his whimsical fun clay sculptures. An easy to follow quick video tutorial walks beginner students through making the basic shape. Possibilities are endless with this fun, quick and easy ceramic project!
