Description

Do your students "Just Know" their multiplication facts? Or are they constantly wrecking their brains by skip counting on their little hands? One of the key areas our 3-5 graders need to master is their facts so I decided to create a Multiplication + Kindness Challenge entitled "Just Know It", playing off of the familiar NIKE slogan, "Just Do It.”

Our kids LOVE sneakers, so to help get them motivated about multiplication, I illustrated and designed a set of 12 Air Jordan-themed trading cards, highlighting each of his signature Air Jordan shoes up to #12. On the reverse side are the corresponding multiplication facts. Students are able to trade cards, challenge each other, and recite the facts to their teachers! But that's just the half of it and this is where the KINDNESS comes in!

I wanted to incorporate an act of kindness within the challenge, so for every student who could successfully recite their facts, a pair of socks were donated on their behalf to a person in need. We collected all of the socks at the end of the challenge and donated them to a homeless shelter of our choosing. This is how we chose to give, but you and your class can come of with other creative ways to show kindness.

Ultimately, we want our students to be great learners, but we also want them to simply be good humans and that means showing them what it looks like to care for others.

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Multiply one-digit whole numbers by multiples of 10 in the range 10–90 (e.g., 9 × 80, 5 × 60) using strategies based on place value and properties of operations.
Fluently multiply and divide within 100, using strategies such as the relationship between multiplication and division (e.g., knowing that 8 × 5 = 40, one knows 40 ÷ 5 = 8) or properties of operations. By the end of Grade 3, know from memory all products of two one-digit numbers.
