Description

Your students will try to crack the mystery of Julius Caesar's assassination with this engaging investigation activity for lessons about ancient Rome, the transition from Roman Republic to Empire, and ancient civilizations! Students will learn about the rise of Julius Caesar and his early demise, one of history's most significant events, through a crime scene investigation case file activity that encourages historical thinking and makes social studies fun!

A visually engaging case file with comprehensive background readings on the rise of Julius Caesar, his conquest of Gaul, the crossing of the Rubicon and the end of the Roman Republic, and more is provided. Leading theories about the motives of the conspirators who assassinated Caesar are provided. Student detectives will encounter background information, primary source text, artifacts, and maps and take detective notes on what they learn. They will then answer the reading comprehension response questions, complete a timeline activity, and draw their own hypothesis about the motives behind Caesar's assassination! Two bonus letter writing extension activities are included as well.

This investigation activity can be used as a printable packet activity, or as an engaging stations classroom activity with groups! Teacher and student notes are provided, along with an answer key for the background reading comprehension activity.

This activity is provided in both ready-to-print color and black and white versions.

This resource makes learning about Julius Caesar, ancient Rome, and ancient civilizations highly engaging and is a great supplement, introduction, or reinforcement activity to any lesson! Students will leave the lesson with an understanding of the events leading up to the assassination of Caesar, and the wider impacts this shocking event had on history.
