Students experience: Students will create vivid moments of the game, write those powerful stories about the players, and craft editorials that do more than just "arm chair quarterback."

✏️ This includes a day-by-day 2-week unit plan with lesson ideas and activities.

What students will learn:

⭐️ Introduction to Sports Writing
A Powerpoint presentation that provides an overview of the three different types of sports stories (game, athlete profile/feature, and game), and key elements of sports writing. This includes 1 writing prompt and a worksheet to analyze a professional sports story. Includes 20 warm-up questions to get students interested in topics related to sports.

⭐️ Overview of Game Story

A Powerpoint presentation that provides an overview the key elements of a sports game and season story. Includes 2 writing prompts, and a worksheet to explore a professional game story.

⭐️ Overview of Feature Story

Two Powerpoint presentations that provide an overview the key elements of an athlete profile/feature story modes. Includes 2 writing prompts, and a worksheet to explore a professional feature story.

⭐️ Overview of Column/Commentary Story

A Powerpoint presentation that provides an overview the key elements of sports column/commentary story. Includes 2 writing prompts, and a worksheet to explore a professional column story. *Includes a sample from columnist Rick Reilly.

⭐️ Collaboration Placemats

There are 3 collaboration placemats (1 for each type of writing). Using similar questions to worksheets, these placements are an effective way to guide students through the different writing genres through guided group discussion prompts. They will touch on purpose, quotations, facts and research, structure, language, and more!

⭐️ Planning the Sports Story

There are two sample sports writing assignments included, as well as a list of sports story ideas. There are also 3 "Planning Forms" to guide students through planning, identifying sources, and generating questions for each type of sports story.

⭐️ Writing the Sports Story

This includes 1 Powerpoint to guide writing and provide samples and walks students through basic guidelines for writing a sports story.
