NOTE: This resource uses American English and is not editable.

These are meant to be used at specific times of the year. Students choose three of the nine prompts to write about at the start of the week. If your students journal five days each week, you could use the Tic-Tac-Toe prompts for Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and have them write about whatever they choose on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Because they choose three prompts in a row, students must make choices, weighing one prompt against another. A student may very well find that in order to choose the prompt he most wants, he must also complete an prompt that he will find more challenging. However, that more challenging prompt is likely to be met with less resistance than if there was no choice and no more motivating prompt to go with it.

This download includes the following Tic-Tac-Toe grids:

  1. First Week
  2. Halloween
  3. Thanksgiving
  4. Hanukkah
  5. Christmas
  6. New Year
  7. Valentine's Day
  8. St. Patrick's Day
  9. Easter
  10. End of School Year
  11. Autumn
  12. Winter
  13. Spring

Here’s what teachers are saying:

✏️ "Love this! I also have the regular (not holiday) journal prompts. I use this for part of my kids writing homework every week. It helped me cut down on copies, and my kiddos love the choice of what to write about, so they are more engaged. Thanks!" -Melani N.

✏️ "A fun activity! Thanks for a great resource!" -Christine W.

✏️ "Adding these to my whiteboard prompts to change things up a little! Thanks for a great product!" -Annette Y.
