Description
Acting as career guidance counselors, students work in groups to prepare a formal research presentation about a career field.
My students have discovered that by the time you reach your senior year, you should already be on track with a specific plan for college and career. That means that students in 8th through 10th grades need to think a lot harder about what they want out of life, what real life is like, and what they need to be doing to prepare for it.
This project is part of a larger series focusing on Life after Graduation. The series is Common-Core aligned and focuses most heavily on the Writing standards and Speaking and Listening standards. In this project, students will focus on making specific claims based on conclusions reached through research and then supporting those claims with statistics and data cited from reliable sources. In the end, they work in groups to present their research in a formal presentation meant to help their fellow students decide on a career path.

The unit comes as an easily-printable PDF file. It lends itself to a classroom that has access to a computer lab or digital devices, but it can be done in a more limited way if computers are not available.
Just a side note: I originally created this Life after Graduation project for a night school class with 9th and 10th graders who had failed English. It was a great way for them to meet English standards, but it also helped refocus them on what they want out of school and why school matters.
