Resource 2: Medieval Japan: Beauty and Fashion Trends in the Heian Period. This 11 page Medieval/Feudal Japan resource for the history classroom explores the Beauty and Fashion Trends of Medieval Japan during the Heian Era. Just seeing the picture of a Japanese woman with painted black is enough to catch the attention of any middle school or high school history student!

Analyzing the beauty and fashion trends in Medieval Japan during the Heian Era is a great way to teach about Japanese History and Culture. The resource studies numerous beauty ideals held by the Japanese elite; it also explores how beauty and fashion can be used as a way to demonstrate social status, and vice versa.

The worksheet contains 11 pages of photos and readings that detail the (to our modern sensibilities) bizarre beauty and fashion ideals of Medieval Japan. For example, teeth blackening, the shaving of eyebrows, wearing up to 40 layers of robes at a time, growing floor length hair and more. It is a fascinating glimpse into the life of the upper class in Heian Japan, and garners strong student buy-in!

The Medieval Japan: Beauty and Fashion in the Heian Period lesson plan is No Prep. Just print, copy and go! It is also differentiated and contains 2 versions of the worksheet (basic and general) so you reach all of your learners. Furthermore, I include both pdf and doc files for each version, so you can edit to suit your needs.

THE TOPICS OF THE SECTIONS INCLUDE

*How different cultures have had different standards of beauty over
    the span of history.

    * How the peaceful and prosperous Heain Period allowed upper class

Japanese to focus on art, literature, and beauty, and how that led to

desire to achieve a refined aesthetic themselves.

    * Oshaguro--teeth blackening: the section details, what it was, how it
    was done, and why.

    * Oshiroi--white face makeup: the section details, what it was, how it
    was done, and why.

    * Hikimayu--shaving off eyebrows and drawing a smudged version high
on the forehead. The section details, what it was, how it was done, and
why the people in Medieval Japan liked this look

    * Juunihitoe--Wearing layered robes. This section details, what it was,
how it was done, and why the elite Japanese wore up to 44 lbs of robes
at the same time. This section explores why this was popular among
    the elite in Heian Japan.

*Kumokami--Very long, straight hair. This section details this trend in

Medieval Japan and explains why it occured, and how the Chinese
    played a role.

    * Long flowing sleeves, red lips-- these sections explore why these
trends were popular among the elite in Heian Japan

    * Men and Commoners-- this section explores what men and Japanese

commoners wore in Medieval Japan, and how their clothing reflected

    their social class.

The individual Medieval Japan: Beauty and Fashion Trends in the Heian Period can be found here: Medieval Japan: Fashion and Beauty Trends in the Heian Period
