The Mindset Matters series features engaging audio visual content that focuses on changing students mindset and character. Each week I attempt to engage my students in conversations about moral and civic values and ways to better contribute to society. Over time I have seen my students change the way they think and act based upon these lessons.
Each Mindset Matters lesson has been produced thoughtfully, painstakingly and has been given many hours of thought and preparation. You can assign these lessons for homework or classwork. To achieve the greatest impact, the teacher should engage the students in a conversation which revolves around the topic raised.
In order to execute this lesson, you will need access to youtube. You will print the graphic organizer which can be handed out as a full or half sheet, use the provided slideshow to review the key information, play the video, and facilitate a discussion.

Directions for Students
Today you will be taking notes on a video. You should focus on gleaming the same information from the video which you do from a CLOSE Read. Listening is slightly different, yet slightly the same as reading. It requires you to draw on different skills to access the same information.
You may focus on:
Vocabulary: Choose words that:
- you don't know
- are central to the theme or meaning of the text
- academic vocabulary
Key Meanings or Confusing Passages
Choose passages that:
- highlight the authors thesis, main argument or central claim
- are central to the theme or meaning of the text
- you are confused or have questions about
Your thoughts of and interactions with the video
You can:
- give your opinion (be specific)
- ask a question (something the text made you consider)
- mark any bias you may detect
- reflect on your own experiences
- make connections with relevant past or present events

Critical thinking is a part of every successful persons academic arsenal, Students will receive a concept that is crucial for critical thinking and success in life. They will be asked to consider the definition and then apply the concept to their own life in the written response.

For each lesson students will receive a thought provoking quote. Students consider the quotes application to their own life by thoughtfully applying the authors intent in a meaningful way for the written response.
Written Response
Take notes as you watch todays video. Keep in mind the provided key concept and quote. Use this information in combination with your own personal experiences to
formulate a response that allows you to adjust your attitude, increase your altitude and bring others up around you.
