Description

This print and digital activity will teach students about the first colonial settlements in America. As students begin their studies of the 13 colonies, they will learn about Roanoke, Jamestown, and Plymouth. Then, students will read about their location, hardships, and successes. This 13 colonies' settlement lesson includes:

How to use this activity in your classroom:

  • Jigsaw method: Divide your class into three groups. Assign each group one of the early colonial settlements; Roanoke, Jamestown, or Plymouth. Students will read and answer questions about their colony. Use chart paper to have students summarize their learning.
  • Whole class activity: Teach each settlement using the print or digital version. Follow up with the comprehension questions.
  • Stations: Set up each colony as a station for students to rotate through as they learn about each colony. Students can write five facts they learned about each colony in their notebooks.
  • Sub plans: Readings are easy to leave with a substitute
  • Homework assignment
