What educators are saying

I used this as part of a mini unit that I did during Halloween week. Students enjoyed and it was very engaging. I will be using again in future years.

Description

This comprehensive lesson plan that works for almost any age lets you take advantage of the film It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown to teach students about Halloween and discuss some issues related to the holiday. Students will learn about and discuss trick-or-treating, costumes, carving pumpkins, , and even scaring people. Beyond that, the movie raises questions of why we tell children stories about mythical gift-giving and what to do when others mock your beliefs. It's also a fun movie to watch and makes a great holoday break!

Inside find:

  • Warmer activity about Halloween
  • Viewing guide with times of key scenes as well as summaries, major actions, themes, and key vocabulary for each scene
  • List of important vocabulary and activities for teaching and practicing those words.
  • Guiding comprehension questions to help students follow the movie and ensure they are following
  • Multiple choice guiding questions for lower level students
  • Discussion questions to discuss the film after watching
  • More concrete theme discussion questions for lower level students.
  • Ideas for extension activities including essay topics
  • Answer keys for all activities
  • Complete Teacher's Guide and Instructions

It does not contain the video itself as that would violate copyright laws. You'll have to locate the film yourself on DVD or through a streaming service.

As with all my lesson plans, this lesson can be used as-is or adapted and expanded upon with your own material. Directions for each activity are clear and thorough, including a method for watching the movie to maximize student engagement and comprehension.
