What educators are saying

I used this project during our intervention and enrichment time. Students were engaged and it tied in nicely with our economics unit.

Description

There’s nothing better than having your students practice their math skills through real-world projects! In this project students will get to choose their future life. From everything to their profession, home, vehicle, entertainment, meal plan, etc. Through their choices, they will have to calculate and balance their monthly budget. This project requires students to add and subtract whole numbers as well as decimals (hundredths place). Whenever I assign this project to students it always “opens their eyes” to how much money things costs and how far their salaries will actually go depending on their choices.

Extensions/suggestions for this project…

Allow students to either research online or browse through magazines, if you have access, to cut out visuals for housing, vehicles, meal plans and entertainment. (I have left room in certain sections for this).

Website suggestions:

Housing - Redfin.com Zillow.com

Vehicles – carmax.com

For meal plans and entertainment you can have them either google images or browse through magazines for photos that represent which option(s) they chose (i.e. personal chef, world traveler, etc.)

I have found when doing this project each year that allowing students to personalize their projects in this way helps them take more ownership and it becomes a great component to show at conferences!

*Note: The two blank sheets at the end of the document leave room for students to add in or draw their photos if you chose to have them do this part. It could also be a great use for a cover page.

There is also a blank “Property” sheet attached as well if you want to allow the students to search online for a house or an apartment in the city they live for more accurate pricing.

Texas teachers: page 3 of the reflections asks students to list the variable and fixed expenses in their budget (4th grade) and their net and gross income (5th grade) If you’re not a Texas teacher or your standards don’t cover these skills just eliminate this page from the project!

This project can be used to supplement: Texas: 4.4A, 4.10A, 5.3K, 5.10B

Common Core: 4.NBT.B.4, 5.NBT.B.7
