Description

This is a hands-on, technology infused, interactive unit where students learn to build 3D figures and learn how to draw 3D isometric figures. This unit can be printed out into a student booklet to bring independence to your junior learners or shared onto your Google Classroom!

Includes links to virtual linking cubes, for distance learners!

Isometric sketching is an area that many teachers find daunting to teach. This unit will make it simple and easy! In this download you will get a 34 page student booklet that covers 7 lessons, and a diagnostic and summative assessment. Lessons include getting started activities, videos, mix and matches and many opportunities to practice from the basics to more complicated figures. There are several reflect and connect mini assessments where students can apply new learning. There is also technology integrated into 2 of the lessons, where students will be using an on-line isometric drawing tool. The ONLY thing you will need is linking cubes!

Lessons:

Diagnostic Assessment (optional): Assess what your students already know.

Lesson #1:

Getting Started: Think Tank Question, What is the difference between 2D and 3D shapes?

Working On it: Shapes sort. Students sort 2D and 3D shapes and match 3D shapes to their properties.

Reflect and Connect: Shape Investigation. Students chose a 3D shape and investigate its properties.

Lesson #2:

Getting Started: Isometric sketching introduction, video and guided practice. Students learn the basics of isometric sketching and practice sketching some basic figures using isometric dot paper.

Working On It: Students practice drawing isometric sketches of a variety of 3D figures and create one of their own.

Lesson #3

Getting Started: Drawing 2D views. Students build 3D figures using linking cubes and view the top, front and side.

Working On It: Student build a variety of 3D figures, given isometric sketches. Students use graph paper to represent 2D views of each figure (top, front, side).

Lesson #4

Getting Started: Students will learn to use Illuminations (an on-line isometric drawing tool). Students will explore the basics of the tool and then create their own isometric sketches.

Lesson #5

Getting Started: Students observe 3 pairs of isometric sketches to determine which ones could have the same drawing but look different.

Working On It: Student will use the Illuminations isometric drawing tool to draw several figures and use the rotation tool to view the figure from different angles. Student will create 2 isometric sketches that appear to be the same from one view, but are different from another.

Reflect and Connect: Students are given 4 different isometric figures and they have to find 3 card matches to each. (The matches are the same figure but shown at a different angle)

Lesson #6

Getting Started: Case Study, M.C Escher (graphic artist who created impossible 3D figures)

Working On It: Students model two 3D figures. They are challenged to sketch all the possible figure they can make by connecting the two model together.

Reflect and Connect: Students are shown a variety of 3D figures. They have to identify which two shapes are different than the others.

Summative Assessment: Assess your students learning.

In this print and teach math unit, students will learn to:

➢ Build 3D models using connecting cubes, given isometric sketches of different views.

➢ Sketch isometric perspectives and different views of 3D figures.

➢ Sketch using a variety of tools, isometric perspectives of different views (top, front, ad side)

➢ Identify 3D shapes and their properties.
