Description
Introduce your students to the Historical Fiction genre with this introductory presentation, guided student notes, historical fiction practice stories, and a historical fiction assessment. All resources come in Print and Digital formats.
Begin by having your students take notes while you go through the 20-Slide Presentation that introduces and explaining the elements of historical fiction. The PowerPoint also contains historical fiction examples using 3 different historical fiction novels: Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson, Uprising by Margaret Peterson Haddix, and Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. It also contains an original piece of historical fiction for students to read and analyze.
Then have your students practice by reading and analyzing the short historical fiction story, Cats in Krasinski Square by Karen Heese. Students will also read a Non-Fiction Companion Piece on the Warsaw Ghetto. After reading both of these pieces, students will summarize the fictional story, identify the fictional characters, identify the real people from history, identify the historical time period, and list the historical evidence from the short story.
Finally assess your students by having them read and analyze the short historical fiction story, Back of the Bus by Aaron Reynolds. Students will also read a Non-Fiction Companion Piece on Rosa Parks and the Civil Rights Movement. After reading both of these pieces, students will summarize the fictional story, identify the fictional characters, identify the real people from history, identify the historical time period, and list the historical evidence from the short story.
