What type of problems can I expect to find in these decimal place value worksheets?

  • Students are introduced to decimals through the tenths place
  • Students practice writing decimals through the tenths place in word form, picture form, fraction form, & standard form.
  • Students practice changing between these four forms of decimals until they have thoroughly mastered it!
  • After this introduction to decimals through the tenths place, they are ready to move on to the Hundredths & Thousandths Places in the next lesson

Why does this lesson only cover decimals through the tenths place?

  • When we want to build atrue understanding of a mathematical concept, it is best to start small.
  • The tenths place is the easiest to model and to visualize.  It is equivalent to a fraction that students are familiar with.
  • By building this strong foundation of the different forms of decimals (standard form, word form, fraction form, and a model), they are ready to take on the hundredths & the thousandths place!

What does Sally’s “Gradual Release Model” entail?

  • Sally’s lessons follow an “I Do, We Do, You Do” format.  A math concept is introduced whole group, students then practice with a partner, and finish with independent work time.  This deliberate scaffolding keeps students from feeling defeated or frustrated!
  • Sally’s packets also build slowly in difficulty.  We meet students where they are, regardless of level.  As students gain confidence, the problems get progressively harder.  Not all students will complete all problems and that is by design!
  • Each packet finishes with a “Challenge Page” for anyone who needs something extra!  Multiple pages of practice are included in every packet to avoid early finishers.

In addition to the deliberate scaffolding, this introduction to decimals lesson includes an instructional guide that is jam-packed with teaching hacks and best practices.  There is also a “Misconceptions” section that allows you to be one step ahead of mistakes students are most likely to make.

This Introduction to Decimals lesson is common-core aligned to 5th grade standard 5.NBT.3A (decimal place value).
