What educators are saying

This resource worked really well with our school’s curriculum and my lesson plan. It was easy to implement because it included different versions. I work with student with learning difficulties, and this resource gave me the flexibility to adapt the lesson to my students’ needs.
My students have been struggling with creating appropriate statements within C-E-R. This was great practice to help them see the difference between each part.

Description

Claim, Evidence, Reasoning (CER) is a method for teaching students to think and write scientifically.

CER is useful when writing a conclusion or explaining the results of an experiment or activity. Students are encouraged to not just give a one-word response, but to make a claim, then justify their answer with data from the experiment, and finally connect the data with scientific reasoning.

You can use the CER method in science to allow students to be able to support their ideas with evidence. This type of writing is helps students meet NGSS standards which require students to engage in argument from evidence.

I use the CER method in my middle school classroom after experiments, projects, or discovery activities. My students ALWAYS forget to put evidence or data into their lab conclusions. Conclusions are always hard and this method makes it simple! CER can be used for all ages- elementary school through high school!

Included in this product are

  • notes- lesson page with an example from actual experiments
  • practice worksheet for students so you can assess their understanding of the CER method!
  • The lesson is available as a fill in the blank notes page or reference sheet.

NEWLY INCLUDED: Extra practice page: Students evaluate 4 experiments and identify the Claim, Evidence and Reasoning for each.
