What educators are saying
Description
Claim, Evidence, Reasoning (CER) is a method for teaching students to think and write scientifically.
CER is useful when writing a conclusion or explaining the results of an experiment or activity. Students are encouraged to not just give a one-word response, but to make a claim, then justify their answer with data from the experiment, and finally connect the data with scientific reasoning.
You can use the CER method in science to allow students to be able to support their ideas with evidence. This type of writing is helps students meet NGSS standards which require students to engage in argument from evidence.
I use the CER method in my middle school classroom after experiments, projects, or discovery activities. My students ALWAYS forget to put evidence or data into their lab conclusions. Conclusions are always hard and this method makes it simple! CER can be used for all ages- elementary school through high school!
