Description

This Math Activ Studio flipchart teaches students to identify, describe, and compare solid shapes. This lesson is aligned with the Houghton Mifflin Math Series, 7.4 - 1st grade. This lesson begins with a display of colorful, solid shapes. Next, the flipchart displays the daily objective, then reviews vocabulary terms needed to understand the content of the lesson: corner, face, and edge, and shows where they are on a solid shape. During the next few slides, students are shown a solid shape, and are asked how many faces, edges, and corners the shapes have. The teacher may use this opportunity for students to learn interactively by going up to the board and demonstrating the faces, edges, and corners on the shape. The students are then given a list of guided and individual work to complete (aligned with the textbook directions). The next page has a review and closure question asking students to explain what they know about solid shapes, then the teacher gives them a description of a solid shape, and the students must answer based on the description given. Last, the students are given a math journal entry in which they are asked to draw a solid shape, describing how the shape can move (i.e. rolling) and must explain why it can move that way.
