Description

Understanding polygons is an essential skill for 3rd grade students. Geometry is filled with a lot of vocabulary and terminology for students to learn. The term "polygon" is often over looked. As a result, students can not categorize figures as polygons or identify shapes that are not polygons.

This video lesson will make a great introduction for your Geometry Unit. This video file also includes student notes for students to complete after watching the video. This video lesson was designed to help teachers quickly teach students about polygons.

Students need additional reinforcement? I have included the video images as a PowerPoint Lesson for you to quickly use with students needing re-teaching!

File Includes:

• Video File Introducing Polygons

• Video as a PowerPoint File

• Student Notes Handout

Aligned to CCSS 3.GA.1: Identify shapes that are polygons and or organize shapes into categories.

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Understand that shapes in different categories (e.g., rhombuses, rectangles, and others) may share attributes (e.g., having four sides), and that the shared attributes can define a larger category (e.g., quadrilaterals). Recognize rhombuses, rectangles, and squares as examples of quadrilaterals, and draw examples of quadrilaterals that do not belong to any of these subcategories.
