What educators are saying

Very engaging - I started an international food unit with my fourth grade global awareness class and they loved learning about all the cool food facts around the world. I wanted to end the food unit by making one of the international dishes mentioned, but we ran out of time.

Description

This is a mini-unit online scavenger hunt on international food items as well as a little dose of table manners from around the world. This mini-unit on food and customs/etiquette touches 5 countries around the world with some extras.

This unit can dovetail nicely into a unit on Thanksgiving and customs for this holiday.

***Note: this is a "fun introductory unit"
It can also be used, later on, to segue in the following subject areas:

Health:
Teaching students how to live a healthy lifestyle has been a new mandate for many ELA teachers (and not just the physical education teacher). During Nutrition Month, it seems that teachers are scrambling to get grocery flyers to cut and paste into the quintessential 5 Major Food Group Pyramid.

Social Studies/History
This introductory unit can be used as a cross-curricular unit with history or social studies. Students compare and contrast table manners in different times and places around the world and identify the changes and find supporting evidence to explain why these changes occurred.

Ethics/Religion/ELA
This can be used to introduce different cultures, customs and beliefs. Moreover, it can be the foundation of a writing unit for ELA with a presentation as a final outcome.

This unit can be done by individual students or in small groups gradually resulting in full class discussion (think Jigsaw-cooperative learning). By using various sources such as: books, magazines, interviewing etc…. their answers will be more accurate and better represented.

------Please note I have provided you with both a "group" package and an "individual" package. There isn't much difference except that the cover pages and some other pages have Group Name or Student Name.
The Group Package is 18 pages (Intro page for teacher)
The Individual Package is 17 pages(no intro page for a teacher, because you already have it in the group package).
