Description

This product is designed for practicing the skill of inferencing. Included are 84 high-interest photos that contain surprising, strange or uncommon content. All of the photos feature an 'event' or something happening so that students can dive into inferencing with interesting and challenging content.

What does it include?

  • 84 interesting photo cards
  • 1 Inferencing Poster
  • 1 Inferencing Strategies Poster
  • 1 Student Mat (for laminating)
  • 7 Different Answer Sheets (differentiated in text support and expected answer quantity)
  • 1 Extension Activity: what will happen next?

How to use it?

  • First model how to make inferences about a photo card using strategies poster (included) as a reference
    • Students can use laminated mat or printed worksheet to record their thoughts

  • Students can move around the room choosing interesting photo cards and making inferences about them on their answer sheets
  • Can be done independently or at a literacy centre
  • Choose answer sheets based on student ability (differentiated options)
  • Cards could be also be used as writing prompts

Rationale:

I created this for my students (G5) who needed challenging and high-interest photos that could have a variety of different explanations. I chose photographs which show an event in progress so that students could also draw on their cause and effect skills to inference. As an extension, some students used the task cards to practice their predicting skills and guess what would happen next. I wanted to keep the task cards generic (free of specific questions) so that I could use them in other formats (writing prompts, predicting, cause and effect, etc)
