What educators are saying

This was a great way to introduce author's voice to my 5th graders. It was easy to introduce and kept the kids engaged.
This was great to go along with our narrative unit. The kids loved acting out the feelings and it really helped them connect to their narrative stories!

Description

What student doesn't love to be an actor? In this unit, which will take approximately 4-6 days, students use their acting ability to translate dramatic skills into writing descriptions of characters' feeling and character traits through "charades."

When this unit is complete, students will be able to show a character's feelings and character traits with words and actions rather than simply telling the reader what's happening. This is also a great unit for emphasizing inferencing in reading!

This unit included:

- Teacher's guide
- Several introduction and definitions slides for instruction
- Guided practice with sample "showing and telling" descriptions
- Independent practice with feelings and character trait charades game cards
- Examples of how to play the game
- Graphic organizers to record game play
- Final writing assessment graphic organizer planning sheet and rubric to be used a pre- and post- test
