This resource divides this stunning graphic novel into five reading sections with a total of 25 reading questions that can be used for discussion or individual response.

The 5 reading sections are:

  • Pete's Story

  • History Lessons

The 25 reading questions include:

  • 4 thematic questions
  • 7 inference questions
  • 6 connection questions
  • 6 elements of writing questions (primarily focused on symbolism)
  • 2 close reading questions

The 2 rubrics give you the option to assess student responses as:

  • written responses - focused on level of insight, use of evidence, and ability to write engagingly
  • discussion responses - focused on level of insight, use of evidence, and ability to collaborate

Story Overview:

The Outside Circle is an inspiring graphic novel by Patti Laboucane-Benson.
Although a work of fiction, it accurately depicts the realities of life for many of Canada's urban Indigenous youth as it follow's Pete's journey from gang member, to prison inmate, to healing centre elder.
