Each of the assignments are as follows:

Alternate Ending:

This assignment is to be given to students while they read their independent book or even a book the whole class is doing together. Students will write an alternate ending for their story. This guided handout includes:

-Directions for the assignment (Expectations for each page)

-Guided questions about the book they are reading (for teacher use)

-A graphic organizer to help students brainstorm their ending

-A rubric to be attached to their final product.

(*Note the rubric requires them to use a minimum of 3 vocabulary words they have learned in class)

Book Review:

This 3 page Independent Reading Assignment is to be used side by side with a student's independent reading book. The Book Review writing assignment asks students to be "critics".

Students will write a book review describing the plot, and students' job is to be critical of their book and dissect it so that future readers will use student opinion to help them decide whether they want to read that type of book or not.

Genre Guide:

This 11 page Independent Reading Assignment is to be used side by side with a student's independent reading book. The genre writing book review assignment explores ALL genres and asks students to think about what devices an author uses to showcase the specific genre of the book they have read.

Then, students will write a book review describing the plot, and students' job is to be critical of their book and dissect it so that future readers will use student opinion to help them decide whether they want to read that type of book or not. 

The product includes:

Teacher and Student Copy (Teacher copy graphic organizer is completely filled, while student copy is partially filled for note taking)

Blind Date with a Book

Don’t judge a book by it’s cover, sometimes we as readers get hung up on what a book looks like, and simply leave it on the shelf. Maybe the artist did not do a good job, or maybe the font simply is not your liking, but what if a student is missing out on a great book simply because it was “attractive enough”. Students will now go on a “blind date” with a book. Using the optional book list provided, pick a book based solely on its summary and begin “dating”.
