Description

Do you want your students to apply the concepts of force, acceleration, impulse and momentum to real world scenario? Do you want them to see actual data to determine forces during collisions?

This is a perfect activity for you.

Students will analyze crash test graphs (acceleration vs time) for four different car seats. They will determine maximum accelerations. Then will apply Newtons second law of motion to determine the forces experienced by a crash test dummy in each of the four car seats. Then they will write up their findings using Claims-Evidence-Reasoning format.

Standards Alignment:

HS-PS2-1 Analyze data to support the claim that Newton’s second law of motion describes the mathematical relationship among the net force on a macroscopic object, its mass, and its acceleration.

HS-PS2-3 Apply science and engineering ideas to design, evaluate, and refine a device that minimizes the force on a macroscopic object during a collision.
