What educators are saying

Well worth the money spent! My students really enjoyed this and I felt like it helped drive home the concept of colonialism.
LOVED this activity! And so did my students! I really liked the connection between Cecil Rhodes and Selfridge in the movie. Will be using this again next year!

Imperialism Concept Application Activity With Avatar

Are your kids struggling with the application of imperialism/colonization? The easiest way to get them to understand imperialism (after teaching) is to watch the movie Avatar! I look forward to this unit every year because it is truly my favorite SS unit and I get the most "ah ha" moments out of my kids!

Application is hard, especially with a unit like imperialism. And as a result, my students ALWAYS ask, why should I care about something that happened sooooo long ago (even if it was only a hundred years or less ago). This is why! History always repeats itself and we don't know how imperialism and colonization will look in the future. So why not give those visual learners something that they can understand! I usually begin this with a discussion of what imperialism might look like in the future and then click "play" on the movie.

This worksheet will focus on European colonization of India and African countries, as that is our main area of study in my area.

You will need the movie "Avatar" the 2009 version directed by Steven Spielberg (obviously not included) to use this activity. I highly recommend to make sure you get the "extended" version that has a family friendly audio option :)

With this unit, you will be provided with a google slides unit, which is a student workbook. So, it can be assigned to students online with almost any online platform and is COMPLETELY editable! Meaning you can add to it or let it stand alone! If you don't have time to differentiate (and let's be honest, who does???), there is a differentiated version provided as well, for your more struggling learners!

This activity is printer friendly if you want, or assign the google slides to your students!

I DO NOT own rights to the movie "Avatar" directed by Steven Spielberg or rights to any of the characters or content. By purchasing this activity, you are NOT receiving those rights. All works created within this activity are original works.
