Description

The ready-to-use printables in this download are all you need for an engaging, persuasive writing activity. *

This lesson requires students to:

1) research a charity or service agency,

2) create a rough draft with detailed information about a self-selected service organization, and

3) draft a persuasive paragraph to be read aloud to the class.

Students do online research to identify a charity of their own choice. Next they locate specific facts and details from which they draft a persuasive essay. Finally, students need to share their work with an audience so they take ownership of their chosen charity and completed essay.

After all the essays have been read aloud, the class may want to vote on which charity would earn the hypothetical $100.

Download includes:

-- prewriting activity,

-- information-gathering paragraph worksheet with blanks for specific information about the student's selected charity,

-- sample information-gathering paragraph worksheet with information about an actual charity,

-- model for the final draft format, and

-- teaching suggestions.

Educators who organize annual service projects can use this writing assignment to identify the charity that resonates most with the students. Whether a donation is actually being made or not, students are often so engaged that the altruistic aspects of the lesson extend beyond the classroom.
