Description

Create a research-based Identity Theft Prevention Guide while teaching your students financial literacy skills! This resource includes activities and a research project on the topics of identity theft, scams, and online fraud.

Students will research the threat of identity theft, learn about the different types of identity theft that may occur, recognize measures consumers can take to prevent becoming a victim of fraud – while also noting the long-term impact identity theft has on its victims.

This resource bundle can be implemented into any financial literacy unit. All the work has been done for you! Students are provided with access to a Symbaloo Webmix of bookmarked websites providing accurate information on each of the topics covered.

As students conduct research, they will save information and images relating to the main areas described in the provided Identity Theft Research Checklist handout. After conducting research, students will create an Identity Theft Prevention Guide using Google Slides or Microsoft Power Point.

A project example is included to serve as a model and to motivate your students!

The research-based prevention guide will include identity theft facts and statistics, describe the various types of identity theft, provide information on how the crime impacts victims, and list steps people can actively take to help protect their identities.

Along with the research project, this resource includes bonus financial literacy activities. Students will read and analyze accounts from real life victims of identity theft and view a video featuring one of the perpetrators. Students will also define a list of key terms relating to fraud and identity theft. Sample key terms include skimming, phishing, and malware.

Answer keys are provided for all activities. The materials are editable in order to meet your needs. The research project and related activities will take approximately 3-4 class periods to complete.
